When are you closed?

We are open 48 weeks in a calendar year. We are closed most major holidays. This typically includes a winter break closure, a summer break, and spring break. We may also need to close due to extreme inclement weather, bereavement, to disinfect if a highly contagious virus has infiltrated our space, or in the case of a world wide pandemic.

What are your hours?

Currently our hours are 7:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

What is your philosophy regarding discipline, guidance, and child development?

We believe children learn through play, and that is best achieved with a centered, kind, experienced adult teacher and developmentally appropriate practices. Children are respected as unique individuals, and we strive to support their inherent essences of will, strength, joy, kindness, and stillness by creating an environment with consistency, respect, clear boundaries, and opportunities to express their emotions safely. We do not use punishment nor isolation to correct behavior. We redirect, “sportscast,” and provide strategies to help a child “get back in their body” when they are feeling big emotions. Our philosophies have developed over the years, and they mostly resemble RIE (child centered development), Waldorf (Rhythm and supporting the three aspects of children), Reggio (the environment as the third teacher), Maslow (a child must have their basic needs met before they can learn), and Piaget (stages of cognitive development.) We do not adhere to only one philosophy (i.e Reggio or Waldorf), but we infuse them into our program to offer the best developmental practices.

Are you licensed, and what is your child-adult ratio?

We are licensed by the state of Oregon as a certified family home child care, and we are able to care for up to 16 children including 3 children under the age of 2. We generally operate with 12-16 children. We currently have 5 qualified staff members in addition to our music teacher, Zoe Chamberlin. Our adult to child ratio is 1:6 for under age 3 and 1:10 for preschool age, however we regularly exceed the requirements for number of staff onsite resulting in an approximately 1:5 ratio for the entire group.

What ages do you serve?

We care for children as young as 9 months up to the age children enter kindergarten. We offer care for school aged children on a weekly basis during summer break.

What training does your staff have?

We have an amazing staff, and they complete a minimum of 15 hours of early childhood training per year. We are all certified in CPR/First Aid with an infant/toddler focus, have food handlers cards, and we have taken the required Reporting and Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect class, and completed all state mandated courses including Health and Safety training and Safe Sleep training. All home occupants and staff are in the Central Background Registry. Please inquire by email for specific education backgrounds of our staff.

Do you provide meals? What are they like?

Yes, we provide breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack, and they are prepared here onsite, except during the months of July and August, where children bring their own packed lunch. We use mostly organic ingredients especially with regards to fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy. Typical breakfast may include hot grain cereal (millet or oatmeal), yogurt, granola, and fruit, or French toast with berries, buckwheat pancakes with bananas, or scrambled eggs with toast and fruit. Typical lunch includes homemade chicken soup, lentil soup, deli meat sandwiches, pasta with butter, cheese, and chicken, and two vegetables often including sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, etc. Snacks are often organic cereal, nuts and fruit, crackers and cheese, homemade popsicles, etc. Our philosophy is that children need nutrient dense food for optimal brain and body development.

Do the children in your care watch tv or learn to use a computer?

There is no tv, computer, nor electronic tablet in the children’s play space.

Is there anything else you think it’s important parents know when they are looking for child care?

Yes. As you look for care, ask who else lives in the house (or center), and who regularly visits. My wife, Pam, a medical coder for Providence also lives here. No one else visits on a regular basis, except for our awesome music teacher, Zoe Chamberlin, who visits for a half hour once a week, and facilitates a super fun music program for our children. We also share our space with Meigetsu, a sweet kitty we brought home 9 years ago after it was apparent someone left her behind when they moved.

Are there guns on the premises? No
